To say we have been busy since the Studio doors opened for the season would be an understatement. As we quickly reminisce let’s take note:
Mark Koepnich spent a few days demonstrating his absolutely mind blowing techniques literally slinging bowls, mugs and whatever else as we stood with wide eyes and open arms running, catching, grabbing, filling all possible horizontal space. He made sure to keep us on our toes during his quick visit from Sea Grove, NC to the beach. Among those pots, Mark threw a dozen beautiful serving bowls to be used for an Empty Bowls Silent Auction. I’m getting ahead of myself, more about that later.
We finally took the next social media plunge and started our very own Instagram- oh yeah!! Make sure to follow us @kinnakeetclay and show us your #potsinaction by posting pictures of you with your beloved pieces from our very own showroom.
The month of May also included the very popular Shore Break 5k, we were honored to whip up 70+ mugs… and we did it in less than 2 weeks! Yeah, you could say we were certainly “go getters” this month. The Shore Break 5k is a wonderfully created opportunity to seize the moment- running on the beach and inhaling as much salt air as possible. The quickest runners, fingers crossed, walked away with an original mug made right here in our studio.
As the doors continued to swing wide open our classes picked up with slabs down and glazes running. We are currently offering 2 classes per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am and we’ll always add an extra class if we can. The space in our classes are limited so call today and reserve your spot, your inner artist is calling.
Empty Bowls was next on our list of ‘things to do’! 100’s of bowls were made for what is, perhaps, the most anticipated and well attended fundraiser on the island. From hand built to wheel thrown, each bowl is individually glazed and truly a one of a kind. And with each creviced jewel a donation is made to help feed those in need on Hatteras Island. This year we added a layer to the event, inviting island artists to paint a serving bowl (thrown earlier by Mr Koepnick). The super-talented-ten joined us in the studio and wowed us with their creations. We gladly rally for this yearly occasion. It is such a wonderful way to bring the community together and make a difference, one bowl at a time, not to mention it marks itself as one heck of a #glazeathon.
We’d be dreaming if we thought we’d have easy sailing from here on out! Summer is here and the kilns are always hot. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and hatterasguide.com to see what else this beach season has in store. Happy Pots!
To mark the end of another wonderful summer on Hatteras Island, we spent August on Facebook celebrating our fabulous fans. Each week, we chose a new fan of the week to be awarded a $35 gift certificate to none other than Kinnakeet Clay Studio & Showroom to be used for shopping, fresh cut flowers or to take a class.
Along with the prize, each fan of the week was highlighted in our cover photos and announced in the timeline. We enjoyed getting to know those fans better and, as always, it is fun to be able to give back!
Here is the full list of winners, where they are from and their fun facts:

“Olivia just brought these lovely flowers and the gorgeous vase from Kinnakeet Clay in Avon. They make me so happy! And doesn’t the vase look like it was made for the dining table? Thanks so much, Antoinette!” – Lynne Foster
Do you know about the Hatteras Island Art Tour?
Whether you are a long-time local, new to the island, or just visiting, we invite you to join in the fun!
It is a collaboration between four local artist-owned ‘sister stores’ on Hatteras Island. The tour takes you from Avon to Hatteras to visit Kinnakeet Clay, The Gaskins Gallery, Family Jewels & Blue Pelican Gallery. You will pick up a card in one of the shops and have it stamped at each shop you visit. When your HI Art Tour card is full, it becomes a $10 gift certificate to be used at any of the four stores.
It’s good, clean fun… and WHO KNOWS what you might discover!
